DOULA IN NORTH LONDON, UK
Professional support in pregnancy, birth
and postnatal period
Hello. My name is Kasia Slazak and I work as a doula in North London. I provide a variety of services around supporting pregnant women during and after the birth. In the Doula section I explain who a doula is and what kind of support I offer. If you're pregnant or if you're planning on having a family of your own feel free to get in touch with me – I'd be more than happy to talk to you about how I can help you.
About me - how I became a doula
I believe that everything happens for a reason, even though most of the times we don't get to see the full picture. When a friend of mine asked me to assist her during her birth I happily agreed despite not having any knowledge or experience in this field. It may come as a surprise :) but natural birth is not something that can be predicted or scheduled for the exact time. Mother Nature has its own clock. In this case my friend's labour started on the same day on which I had an important job interview. I decided to stay with my friend and I never regretted this decision.
During the birth I surprised myself with how much calmness there was in me. Despite the difficulties I simply knew what to do, when and what to say. It was an amazing experience, at that time I didn't know how significant it was for me to be there. When another friend of mine asked me to accompany her when giving birth I felt every part of me started to vibrate. I couldn't stop asking myself – 'Is this path leading me somewhere? Is there something for me to see? To find out?' It wasn't until I attended training for doulas that I consciously have taken that path.
The time has passed by; I've been to other births, feeling immensely privileged to be there for each women in that important moment of her life. Birth is such an amazing rite of passage, and it is an honour to witness the miracle of a New Life arriving. Now I know that being a doula is my calling – a very fulfilling one indeed.
I'm registered with Doula UK (www.doula.org.uk). I completed my doula training in February 2010 and have been expanding my knowledge about birth and baby care ever since. Further training I have attended includes: - Birth without intervention by Sarah Buckley; Baby's Father Support; Breech Births; First Aid for Babies; Breastfeeding; Techniques for an easy labour with Ina May Gaskin; Pregnancy Massage; and Baby Infant Massage.
I'm also a student of Elena Tonetti – creator of the 'Birth as We Know It' movie – I offer individual sessions and workshops aimed at healing personal birth trauma based on this approach.
Kasia Slazak - more about me
I've spent the majority of my life on increasing my awareness of being present, being here and now, in the moment. In other moments I live my life the best I can. I love dancing and reading. Right now I'm fascinated by natural birth, water birth, home birth, simply birth :) The sun and dark chocolate give me sweet energy; I like travelling and I love laughing. I also want to learn how to play the drum. Is that enough to describe me? I don't think so, but words are never enough...
